Easily attainable, the historical center of the country preserves several ruins of the ancient fortifications and the rocca del Cassero, dating back to the second half of the 14th century , it's centre of the Show. Monte San Savino is the birthplace of both Andrea Contucci, called "il Sansovino" (1460-1529), renowned sculptor andarchitect, and Giovanni Maria Ciocchi (1487-1555) who became Pope Julius III.
The most important monuments face on to the central Corso Sangallo: the little 17th-century church of Santa Chiara, preserving in its aisless interior noteworthy terracottas
by Sansovino and the Della Robbias; the Loggia dei Mercanti, a slender and elegant Renaissance gallery resting on four pilasters with Corinthian capitals and attributed to Sansovino; The Monumental Palazzo Comunale by Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio, once the residence of the Del Monte family; the church Pieve or Misericordia; the crenellated tower of Palazzo Pretorio, dating back to the 14th-century; the church of Sant'Agostino (site in Monte place), on which Sansovino worked, with its elegant gothic portal, a beatifullcloister and interesting frescoes. Continuing along the main street, do not miss the baptistery of San Giovanni, with a portal by Sansovino and the Porta Romana at the end of the street.
From Monte San Savino a highly recommended detour takes us to GARGONZA (9 Km.)an unspoilt medieval castle in a solitary and suggestive position, which offers an outstanding example of a typical settlement in feudal times.
Near the exit of highway A1we find the church of Santa Maria delle Vertighe, on a little hill-ock covered with cypresses. From the portico we gain access to the interior, divided into a nave and three aisles, eith a beatiful coffered ceiling; behind the high altar is a fine triptych by Margarito d'Arezzo, while other interesting works can be seen in the little museum attached to the convent.
Mountain St. Savino is also famous for the workmanship of the ceramics.
